Em. prof. dr. Ate Kloosterman

Ate Kloosterman studied Biochemistry at the Utrecht University and graduated in 1976. From 1976 until 1979 he worked at the department of Cell Biology from the Central Laboratory of the National Blood Transfusion Centre in Amsterdam (now known as Sanquin).

He joined the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) in 1979 and became involved in blood group serology. In 1989 he became responsible for the implementation of the forensic DNA technology in the Netherlands. His work contributed to the approval of the forensic DNA technology in the Netherlands and resulted in 2002 in a thesis: “DNA-polymorphisms and their use in forensic typing in the Netherlands” and a number of scientific papers on the forensic use of DNA. His thesis was awarded with a cum laude designation and the Premio Extraordinario from the University of Santiago de Compostela. He is qualified as an expert witness (under permanent oath) in forensic biology and forensic DNA-analysis. He is also expert in DNA kinship analysis and the application of DNA in the forensic identification of human remains.

In April 2008 he was appointed Professor by Special Appointment in Forensic Biology in the Faculty of Science UvA. January 14, 2010, ADK delivered his inaugural speech: "Recht doen met forensisch DNA-onderzoek" at the UvA in Amsterdam. May 2018 at his official retirement ADK hold his valedictory lecture “40 years of Forensic Biology: determining the truth as a scientific mission”. During this ceremony, ADK was honoured for his work within the field of forensic science as a knight in the order of the Dutch lion, a high civil title in the Netherlands royal system.

After retirement ADK part-time continued his employment at the UvA and at the NFI (the latter until the end of 2020).
